FASHION NEWS to ThInK about!

The ninth annual Tulip and Pansies: The Headdress Affair, a benefit for VillageCare was held on May 20, 2010. VillageCare is a non-profit in New York that provides healthcare for people living with HIV/AIDS. Kelly Cutrone co-chaired the event with Ariana Rockefeller. Cutrone owns People's Revolution, a PR firm, and is the star of her own reality show on Bravo, "Kell on Earth." Designers such as Tracy Reese, Betsey Johnson, and The Blonds participated with others at the event. DKNY and House of Holland showed their vibrant colored dresses and extreme headdresses made out of hundreds of dollars worth of flowers. They used flowers such as orchids, peonies, and roses.The floral couture was shown on a runway with models that ranged from the drag queens of The Imperial Court of New York to legendary model Pat Cleveland, who stole the show with her theatrical sashay down the runway.

SCAD 2010 Showcase

The Savannah College of Art and Design presented Fashion Seen: 2010 Showcase May 20, 2010. The premier event featured the collections of 20 senior students from the SCAD School of Fashion. Gabrielle "CoCo" Chanel introduced jersey suits in May 1916. A jersey is a soft and elasticated knit that was used for undergarments before she introduced her suits because its appearance and its weave were difficult to handle. Because of war time circumstances, Chanel adopted a jersey as couture fabric. The suits eliminated the waistline, and had a simplified elegance. For the first time in women's fashion, women showed their bare ankles in the streets. People were surprised by the new style, but the revolutionary use of jersey was successful.

FASHION SHOW HIGHLIGHT

Viktor and Rolf has taken on the Fall 2010 menswear collection to another level! The vibe that they set of in Paris during their fashion show in January was noted as "breathless" by GQ. Tailored suits were combined with slouchy sweaters. Also, wool coats, pleated pants, jeans, and double-breasted suits were designed.

Did you know?

Levi's original blue jeans were sewn with orange thread because it matched the color of the copper rivets. The copper rivets enhanced the durability of the jean and strengthened the seams. This idea to add copper rivets came from a Russian tailor named Jacob Davis. Denim is actually made from cotton. Indigo and white thread combined makes the denim color. One bale of cotton can make 225 pairs of jeans.
